Reducing Exclusions
Reducing exclusions in the CPR Success Zone has been a big success story. In broad terms we have been able to significantly reduce exclusions in the secondary schools in comparison with their own previous exclusions, particularly the fixed term exclusion. Our secondary schools have all achieved half of the exclusions for their previous year. They have half the rate of fixed term exclusions of other schools in Cornwall. This has been achieved in a number of ways.
-
In some schools this has been accomplished with whole school behaviour reviews and developing more social and emotional ways of working using the Social, Emotional aspects of learning programme (SEAL)
-
Most primary schools have also changed the way they are working, using Learning Mentors, Nurture groups and the SMART team to support the partnership working to reduce fixed term exclusions with our pupils.
-
The three secondary schools have developed some managed moves protocols for use when students need a new school to improve their opportunities to succeed at school. For a more explicit explanation of the way the schools use this system contact the pastoral staff at the school.
-
In many cases the SMART team staff are involved in supporting students proactive management of students improving their social and emotional skills though family support work, student support work or in some cases some restorative justice approaches to problem solving.
