Lanner Primary School

Lanner School is in the centre of the village of Lanner, two miles south of Redruth. The village grew up around the two tin mines of Tresavean and Pennance. The mines thrived during the nineteenth century and many terraces of miners’ cottages were built along the valley and lower slopes of Carn Marth

These cottages form the heart of the village now, but several housing developments over the past forty years have expanded the original village a great deal. A Methodist Chapel, Anglican Church, two pubs, post office, bakery, fish and chip shop, general store and village hall give the village facilities and its own identity.

The original Lanner Village School was built and opened in 1877 run by the Gwennap School Board. This traditional Cornish granite building provided education for the children of the village for one hundred years. In the late seventies, structural problems with the original building meant that a new school building was needed.

The current school buildings were opened in 1980. The school is a single storey structure with 8 class rooms, purpose built nursery section, hall, kitchen, library, 2 playground areas, one of which includes a climbing wall, and extensive grassed and garden areas.   Each classroom has an Interactive Whiteboard to enhance teaching and learning.  In addition to this, the school has a portable ‘suite’ of 20 laptop computers plus a small computer suite comprising of 4 computers, an e-mac as well as digital photography and film resources.  (maybe hyperlink to ICT section of curriculum section?)  Lanner School is also well equipped for cookery lessons with a newly installed kitchen area.  The school can be accessed from Lanmoor Estate and Bell Lane. The school is spacious and modern but retains the old school bell in the entrance and the granite name stones by the playground entrance to retain connections with the past.

The school has an extensive private playing field just a 5 minute walk from the main school grounds.
