FAQs
What is PACT?
-
It's the partnership between home and school that teaches children skills for life, in order to help them :
-
Manage their feelings
-
Make good friendships
-
'Stand up' for themselves and not be 'pushed around'
-
Feel good about themselves
-
Make decisions
-
Understand different types of relationships
-
-
It is a new way of working which builds on the Social and Emotional Aspects of Learning (SEAL) at school and at home
-
It helps to prepare children for their teenage years and adulthood
Why PACT?
Because research has shown that:
-
Parents in Cornwall want to know what school teaches their children about these 'life skills'
-
Parents already talk to their children at home, but would like to do it more, and have asked for information and resources to help them when their children are between 8 and 12 years old
-
Parents and schools would like to 'join forces' to support children and young people better
PACT is committed to supporting children and parents to make this happen.
What do we mean by the term 'parent'?
-
A parent is either male or female and includes all those who provide the main care for children in the home or family. This includes a wide range of people, not just biological parents but grandparents, step parents, adoptive parents, foster parents, carers and many more.
Why involve parents/carers?
Because:
-
Parents are the Number 1 influence in a child's world. If these 'life skills' are discussed at home, it may help protect the children from taking unsafe risks as teenagers.
-
No one else knows their child like a parent does (though it may not always feel like it)
-
Children want and need to talk to their parents about personal issues
What can parents/carers do to get involved with PACT?
-
Attend the PACT launch and see their child take part
-
Agree to take part in the family activities once a week in the autumn and summer terms
-
Use the school as a resource bank of information to find out more about what's happening with the SEAL/PACT programme
-
Meet the team of people who will be available in school to give advice and support about any concerns
-
ENJOY IT!
-
Let the PACT team know what they think by filling in the Thought Diary each week, and by coming to the 'follow up' events
