National Open College Network (NOCN) Qualification
Parents And Children Together, together with Family Learning, are currently running an OCN Level 1 qualification course for parents : Developing Skills for Listening to Children.
This is a 20 hour course, and is currently up and running with approximately 15 parents on board. The course will run until the end of March 2009. There is usually a PACT Project Consultant (Sue Adams and/or Debby Morris) and a Parent Support Adviser. The sessions are informal and very relaxed.
Following on from the PACT school launch at the beginning of term (which makes up part of the 20 hours!), Session 1 is the paperwork session. Parents have had to complete the registration forms and discussed the content of the course. There was also an Information Advice & Guidance presentation, which is a compulsory part of the course, provided by Cornwall College.
Session 2 is the "listening skills" part and involves more detailed, written work. This is carried out over a period of approximately 2 hours and the parents work together.
Alongside these sessions, parents have been asked to complete a journal which involves jotting down notes of 'wow' moments, as well as 'not sure about that' moments whilst talking to their children. This is not marked, but is a useful tool for the parents. There is also an additional piece of 'work' which is the Chat Time Evaluation Record booklet which links in with the PACT Chat Time Activities which come home from school with their child(ren).
The final session, Session 3, is a Time Capsule Day and is due to be held in March. This is a 'fun' day for the parents and their child(ren) to do activities together. This will take place in the CPR Learning Space, Cranberry Road, Camborne.
