Emotional Learning

Everyone at the Learning Space understands the importance of building strong relationships within and between learners. Learners need to develop an awareness and understanding of their own emotions in a safe and supportive environment and an ability to express them in an appropriate way. Emotional literacy and self esteem underpin learning potential, so we have designed a new programme to help the students tap into their emotions to expand their learning potential.

During the sessions, students take part in a range of kinaesthetic activities, geared towards recognising, expressing and dealing with emotions. The day begins with warm ups and icebreakers to relax the students and get them thinking creatively, then they split into three groups and rotate around three workshops:

The workshops are followed by a Philosophy Club. Using a wide range of images (photographs and paintings), the students are asked to select one that they find interesting. The images and the students’ reactions to each are shared in a group. The discussions raised by this simple resource are very interesting, particularly when a single image evokes a range of different emotions in different people. Often the students discuss things such as use of colour, how the photo is arranged, whether it reminds them of a place they have visited etc.
So far we have run the emotional learning programme with different ages, from infants up to adults.  Emotional learning can also become part of a school’s support for Gifted and Talented students.
