Restorative Justice

The principle behind Restorative Justice (RJ) is one of putting victims and offenders together in a controlled environment so that the offender can be helped to understand the impact of their behaviours.
Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs) deliver their work in the schools using RJ approaches. Where a school has a request for RJ intervention, this will be referred to the PCSO or Neighbourhood Team Manager for this work. A member of the Neighbourhood Team will also attend the weekly SMART briefing meeting to discuss RJ issues relating to specific requests which have been made to SMART.

"RESTORATIVE JUSTICE REDUCES CRIME BY 27%"
"The key findings of research studies evaluating seven Cambridge University-led experiments in Restorative Justice led by Sir Charles Pollard shows :
- for every £1 spent on delivering RJ conferences, £9 were saved in fighting the cost of crime
- 33% less repeat offending among offenders coming out of prison after Restorative Justice than without it
- 55% less offending among violent offenders supervised in the community
- 10 out of 12 tests of Restorative Justice have reduced the frequency of repeat offending in the UK, US and Australia"
